Kevin McCarthy was ousted as Speaker of the house in a historic vote
Kevin McCarthy has been removed as House Speaker, a first in U.S. history. Stillness fell as the presiding officer gaveled the vote closed, 216-210, saying the office of the speaker “is hereby declared vacant.”
Days after narrowly avoiding a government shutdown, Speaker McCarthy was ousted from the House in a 216-to-210 vote.
A handful of McCarthy's fellow Republicans also voted to remove him leading to McCarthy being the shortest-serving Leader of the House since 1876.
